Located in eastern Colorado, Baca County includes the towns of Campo, Pritchett, Springfield, Two Buttes, Vilas and Walsh.
Formed in 1887, Baca County is and has always been highly dependent on agriculture. The County has experienced many booms and busts throughout its storied history, including rapid growth in the 1880’s, followed by a decline in population and agriculture in the 1890’s. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railroad in 1926 created three new towns and a population increase.
The Dust Bowl arrived in the 1930’s and Baca County was one of the hardest hit counties in the country. Today the U.S. Forest Service supervises 220,000 acres of Comanche National Grasslands; the Colorado Division of Wildlife also maintains recreations areas at Two Buttes Lake and Turk’s Pond.
